Running Lingo 101

It can be difficult to understand a runner speaking in what appears to be their own language.

Here are some commonly used words and phrases to help you follow a conversation:

Reps: Repeats. Interval training e.g. 4 x 400 m with a 2 min rest.

Fartlek: The Swedish word for speed play. Varied pace running. e.g. 5 miles with 30 sec hard, 30 sec easy, repeated. You could do this in swimming too.

Tempo: Sustained effort runs, for about 20- 30 mins, hard enough so you can only utter a couple of words.

10 K pace: The same pace per mile you ran your last/fastest 10 K.

Negative Split: Running the second half of a race/interval faster than the first half.

Pick ups: Short accelerations during a run.

Race Pace: Faster than tempo. Too fast to speak.
